This weekend the Byron Carlyle offers an alternative to the packed streets of South Beach. Enjoy an evening at the theater and dinner in North Beach.

Brazz Dance Theater and the Miami Dance Festival close the 2010 Festival performance season with the presentation of Some Things Revealed, an evening of distinct contemporary dance performed by Brazz Dance Theater, one of  Miami’s leading dance companies, and Moving Current Dance Collective, one of Florida’s top modern dance companies. The performance will take place at the Byron Carlyle Theater in Miami Beach, on Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 8:30pm. Tickets Available

In a spirit of experimentation, Some Things Revealed combines Brazz Dance Theater’s Afro-Fusion aesthetic with the fluid and vanishing movement style of Moving Current Dance Collective. In the coming together of these distinct idioms, a dialogue is established that reveals possibilities in dance. The evening program will showcase the Miami premiere of Some Things Revealed, to be performed by Moving Current; the work was created by Augusto Soledade, winner of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in choreography in 2008, and two-time Miami Dade Choreographer Fellow.  Marty Clear, dance critic, calls Some Things Revealed delightful, a sensual but serious piece with Latin twinge imparted mostly through music.

Among the highlights of the bill is the encore performance of Kayala, Augusto Soledade’s latest work that uses an Afro-Brazilian folktale as inspiration for the creation of the work. The book How Night Came from the Sea, an Afro-Brazilian folktale, told by Mary-Joan Gerson sparked the choreographer’s interest to draw ideas from some of the literary images in order to explore the concepts of Night and Day, and create a contemporary dance that is appropriate to all ages. Fast paced, energetic and intense movements are used to represent a sense of Day while Night brings a calmer and soothing aspect to the work. The movement contrast found in Kayala makes the work dynamic, entertaining, and a pleasant celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage. The Afro-fusion style of the company echoes the cultural diversity of its home base, Miami, and showcases the highly skilled and well round trained company dancers, presenting a performance that is nuanced, different and full of energy.
