South Florida-based singer Anabel has been a member of such groups as Salsabrava and Retrozon, as well as pursuing her solo career as an interpreter of diverse musical styles, including salsa, bolero and son. Since 2005 Anabel has led her own group, Ke o Ke, showcasing her unique fusion style. She has shared the stage with musicians such as Willy Chirino. Albita Rodriguez and Cachao. Miami On Stage will continue on the first Saturday of each month, through June of this year so mark your calendars.

April 3 will feature the great timba band Tiempo Libre at North Beach’s Byron Carlyle Theater with the Miami premiere performance of their Bach in Havana, a salsa meets Classical music mash-up based on the CD of the same name, which this year was nominated for a Grammy Award.

On May 1, again at the Byron Carlyle, there will be an evening with three solo Hip Hop theater artists, Rudi Goblen, Summer Hill Seven and Meshaun Lebrone Arnold. This program is co-presented with Miami Light Project.

Performers for the final June 6 show will be announced shortly. Tickets for these other shows will go on sale in advance of each date.

North Beach News sponsors free yoga on Mondays and Fridays at 7AM behind the North Beach Band Shell. Instructors in Skanda Yoga lead the 60-minute classes on the sandy area next to volleyball nets.

Stretch your body and breathe in the balmy sea air as the sun rises over the ocean, a privilege in the winter months when the rest of the country is shivering.

The Friday class began in June 2009 and has attracted a dedicated group of regulars from around the neighborhood along with other locals as well as out-of-town visitors. Given the popularity of the Friday class, the Monday class was added in November of last year.

Street parking is plentiful and free at that hour along Ocean Terrace or in the lot on the other side of Collins, between 72^nd and 73^rd Streets. Bicycle racks are also available near the shower area next to the beach walk.

The class is adapted for the sandy conditions and all levels of practice are welcome to attend. No mats are necessary but the instructors recommend bringing a large beach towel or blanket.

There is no admission charge to the two-day festival that showcases the paintings, sculptures, photos, ceramics, glass works and jewelry of some 150 artists and artisans from around the country. Also participating is singer and painter Paul Stanley who found fame as the frontman for heavy metal band Kiss and whose “Miami Sunset” is the work featured on the festival’s poster this year.

January 15th was the kick off the online auction of the original “Miami Sunset.” The auction closes January 31, the last day of the festival, with proceeds to benefit Arts for Learning’s after-school programs. In addition to the painting, the winner will receive an invitation for two to a private dinner party with Stanley at the Diplomat Hotel in March, hosted by the Wentworth Gallery of Boca Raton.

New to the festival in 2010 is the MiMo Dance Party, celebrating music from 1945 to 1965, the years that saw the rapid development of Miami Beach and the emergence of the distinctive building style that makes the city unique. Stick around after the sun sets on Saturday, January 30, to swing, swoon or shake, rattle and roll from 6 to 930PM at the North Beach Bandshell, itself a prime example of MiMo design.

The party will feature musical hits from the 1945 to 1965, the twenty-year period that saw the rapid expansion of Miami Beach and the emergence of the distinctive mid-century architecture that distinguishes the streets of North Beach from the Deco-inspired counterparts in South Beach. The big mid and North Beach hotels were renowned for glamorous venues that hosted top-tier talent to entertain vacationers and locals alike.

The bandshell structure is itself a prime example of the style known as MiMo, for Miami Modern, and is now a landmark within the North Shore district, the latest addition to the National Register of Historic Places. The party playlist will reflect the early days of rock-n-roll, with the likes of Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, to the Drifters, Ray Charles and the Beatles, who performed in February 1964 on a special broadcast of “The Ed Sullivan Show,”  airing live from the Deauville hotel, another MiMo gem of North Beach.

The family-friendly event takes place from 6 to 930pm on Saturday, January 30. Admission is free.

“The festival gets a lot of visitors, so it’s the perfect place for us to begin the sign-up campaign for North Beach News,” says Daniel Veitia, who conceived the idea and put it into effect under the sponsorship of Urban Resource. “We’ll have a booth at 73rd Street in front of the bandshell with two laptops and people will be there to help with the simple sign-up process. Local business owners can create articles, offer coupons, sales, special information directed only to residents – whatever they want the public to be aware of.  Local residents can find out if there’s something happening that directly affects them in terms of construction, parking, etc.  Neighborhood and Condo associations can use it as a forum to keep residents informed.  They can all talk about what’s important to them.  It’s a site that has an incredible potential, and we’re very excited about it.”
