Normandy Isle Improvements Phase I – Before/After

The City of Miami Beach has issued some “right of way” improvements for the Normandy Isle neighborhood of North Beach. According to Public Information Specialist for the Office of Capital Improvement Projects Lauren Firtel, “right of way” improvements refer to construction work to improve city-owned passageways, which includes, but is not limited to, roadways, sidewalks, swales, and infrastructure.

The proposed enhancements will not only improve curb appeal throughout Normandy Isle, but will also serve a functional purpose to address flooding, lighting, and visibility/accessibility for cars and pedestrians throughout the commercial district of Normandy Isle.

The plan encompasses adding brick paved crosswalks at five intersections (along Marseille Dr at Trouville Esplanade, Calais Dr, Rue Notre Dame, and Calais Dr at Trouville Esplanade), as well as replacing commercial district sidewalk pavers and extending pavers at the southernmost street end of Trouville Esplanade.

Details for the enhancements include:

  • Storm water drainage: Drainage structures and pipes will be installed to alleviate flooding along the right of way. This new system will later be connected to the City’s more advanced drainage system that includes future pump stations in North Beach.
  • Swale re-grading: Swales will be leveled and re-sodded in order to improve drainage and encourage water flow to the newly proposed catch basins that will be installed in the swale.
  • Driveway apron installation: Asphalt driveway approaches will be placed within the right of way to those properties that do not already have one.
  • Lighting improvements: Additional acorn-style pedestrian lights will be installed to improve lighting in the areas along Marseille Drive and Calais Drive.

  • Sidewalk improvements: Sidewalk pavers will be replaced within the commercial district of Normandy Isle at the following intersections:
    • 71st Street and Rue Notre Dame
    • 71st Street and Vichy Drive
    • Normandy Drive and Vichy Drive

All other aforementioned improvements will take place along Marseille Drive from Trouville Esplanade to Rue Notre Dame, along Calais Drive between Rue Bordeaux and Trouville Esplanade, at Trouville Esplanade southern street end, and the commercial district intersections of Vichy Drive at 71st Street and Normandy Drive, and Rue Notre Dame at 71st Street and Normandy Drive.

Although these are second phase improvements, the City’s continued attention to detail in North Beach shows a promising future for the area. Stay tuned for further improvements coming soon to North Beach!
