International design firm West 8 has been scouted and hired to head up the $6.5 million re-design of North Shore Open Space Park. Located east of Collins Avenue from 79th Street to 87th Street, this park is one of the largest in Miami Beach, and the only beachfront park that has public grills and picnic pavilions, making this a wonderful space for friends and families to gather on the weekends.

With offices in New York, Rotterdam, and Belgium, West 8 employs more than 70 architects, urban designers, landscape architects and industrial engineers. Their leading team has worked on projects in Spain, Colombia, Russia, and beyond. Their marvelous work can be admired by visiting Miami Beach’s SoundScape Park in front of the New World Symphony on Washington Avenue and 17th Street. After the project’s completion in 2011, SoundScape Park was voted as one of the top ten “Best Outdoor Movie Theaters” in American by ‘Travel+Leisure Magazine’.

Beach access is surely one of the greatest qualities of the North Shore Open Space Park. The beach walk, found on the east side of the park, extends one mile south where it meets Allison Park. Plenty of easily accessible parking lots make North Shore Open Space Park convenient to visit and a great year-round option for visits to the beach.

West 8 North Shore Open Space Park Vision Plan

West 8 Vision Plan for North Shore Open Space Park

West 8’s proposed plans for the park include preservation of “large patches of natural beachfront habitat, and improving access to the waterfront.” In order to create a vision for the re-design, the West 8 team executed a detailed research analysis to identify areas for needed improvements.

“North Shore Open Space Park offers City of Miami Beach residents and visitors access to 36-acres of beachfront green space. This project proposes to enhance the landscape and walkability of the park, with the purpose of preserving its passive and natural character. Our goal is to improve safety and park amenities. The park’s vision plan includes an expanded network of walking paths, new park lighting, new shade structures, revitalized lawns, iconic gateways, a beach walk extension, tree pruning and removal of invasive plants,” says Capital Improvement Projects Director David Martinez.

Some proposed elements of the plan include a new 4,000 square foot building containing concessions, restrooms and Ocean Rescue offices to flank the south end of the park, and the park will also see more than two miles of new concrete paths, weaving throughout, perfect for running, jogging, rollerblading or strolling. Award-winning LED light poles will offer plenty of visibility throughout the park, while brand new signage and fencing will more clearly mark park entrances and perimeters.

The new and improved North Shore Open Space Park will serve an ever-growing community in North Beach, and will be used by thousands of both residents and visitors. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting renovation!

Sounds great….but will it still be full of homeless bums and who sleep on the picnic tables, pass out from drinking booze , leave their trash laying around, bother tourists and generally make our whole neighborhood look and feel disgusting? Its unreal how the city lets these lazy drunk slobs run wild and trash our town…. what a joke.

It’s true there is a homeless population in the park. However, if we focus on some of the positives you will see the homeless population has decreased significantly over the years. I attribute this to the constant improvements we see in the park and the activation by area residents. Whether its the dog park or the free yoga and tot lots, this park is being utilized by the community and with that activation the homeless will want to move on. Once these new improvements are completed, I can only imagine how great it will be for residents to enjoy. Until then, when see homeless drunk or drinking in public, I call the police and have them come out and remove the homeless.
