In a few weeks, an important resolution will be on the ballot; and if you live, work, or play in North Beach, it will affect you. Residents will be asked to vote on Resolution 2015-29116 regarding the Ocean Terrace Overlay District, which North Beach News has been following closely. The resolution will ask whether the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for the Ocean Terrace Overlay District should be increased from 2.0 to 3.0 for residential and hotel use only.

“Voting has been made so easy through early and absentee voting that there is no excuse not to do this essential civic duty,” said Former Miami Beach Vice Mayor, Michael Gongora. “In Miami Beach most elections are decided by less than 10,000 votes so every vote really counts. For North Beach residents, there is also a ballot question on increasing zoning in Ocean Terrace, so besides voting for mayor and commissioners, the future of your neighborhood is awaiting your decision.”

Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Grieco weighed in;

“Because Miami Beach elections occur in odd-numbered years we consistently see lower voter turnouts than during national or state-wide elections. With 89,000 residents, only half are registered to vote and based on history we will only see between 10,000 and 11,000 ballots cast on November 3. What folks need to realize is that the decisions made at the municipal level affect their lives exponentially more than what happens in D.C. Local politics may not be sexy to some, but the City is police, fire, parks, roads, and a litany of other services that we use and need every day. Good government at the municipal level should rank higher with the average voter.”

Voters will be responsible for electing a Mayor and three City Commissioners in Groups IV, V and VI. The candidates in each group are:
